The futon is a comfy place in her room to relax, sleep, and play around. It's beside her crib (but she also sleeps in a pack-n-play in our room - so she never sleeps alone.) In Japan, a futon is just a pad on the floor, not the woodframe couch-like thing you see in the US. It's simple, and she can roll around (and off it) all she wants.
